Key takeaways
- Each Etsy listing can have up to 20 photos and 2 videos.
- Etsy recommends photos at least 2000 pixels wide and high. Your first photo should be at least 635 px in both dimensions to avoid showing up lower in search.
- Supported files are .jpg, .gif, .png, .svg and .heic. Transparent areas show as black, and animated GIFs aren’t supported.
- Make the first photo landscape or square and leave room around the item, because Etsy crops thumbnails to square, portrait and landscape.
Etsy publishes more image detail than most marketplaces. The rules that trip sellers up are transparency, thumbnail crops and, for personalized items, what the first photo has to show.

Leave room for Etsy’s three thumbnail crops
Etsy shows your first photo as square, portrait and landscape thumbnails in different places. Its image guidance says to shoot further back than you think you need, keep the most important part centered, and use the thumbnail adjustment tool to check all three views. Etsy also advises uploading horizontal images rather than square crops, because vertical photos lose more to cropping.
Etsy’s rules on whose photos you can use
- Handmade sellers must use their own photographs in listings
- For personalized items such as engraved or monogrammed products, the primary image must show a finished, personalized item
- Don’t use a blank product image or a mockup with placeholder text such as “Your Text Here” as the main image
- Mockups and digital images are fine in additional photos to show personalization options
How Photolister handles Etsy photos
- Use a solid style such as Studio White, Pure White or Concrete for Etsy. A Transparent export would display with a black background on Etsy
- Paid photo packs include an Amazon/Etsy export preset at 2000 × 2000 JPG, which meets Etsy’s 2000 px recommendation in both dimensions
- That preset is square. Etsy accepts a square first photo, but its thumbnails also crop to landscape, so keep space around the item and check the previews
- Consistent framing keeps a collection looking like a set in your shop grid
Your first five photos on Photolister’s free trial include standard 2000 × 2000 downloads in Studio White, Pure White, Concrete or Transparent. Marketplace export presets, restyles and custom backgrounds come with a one-time paid photo pack. Presets prepare files; they don’t guarantee a marketplace will accept a listing.
