Marketplace product photo requirements: what to change before you cross-list
Compare product photo requirements for eBay, Etsy, Amazon, Walmart and resale platforms, with official sources, regional limits and editing cautions.
By Photolister · Platform sources checked September 30, 2026
A single source photo can be useful on several sales channels. A single finished export is less dependable. One destination may need a white main image, another may display a portrait cover, and another may prohibit image editing altogether.
The practical approach is to keep original photographs, choose an export for each destination, and inspect the actual listing preview. Use the comparison below to decide what needs changing before you spend time editing a whole folder.
Official sources checked September 30, 2026. Amazon, Walmart, Mercari, and TikTok Shop entries refer to US documentation. Vinted refers to vinted.com. Other entries identify the official English-language source; regional and category rules can differ.
How to read this comparison
“Requirement” means the linked source states a rule or file specification. “Recommendation” means platform advice, not a universal upload minimum. “Display” describes how an image appears. “Not verified” means this guide does not have an authoritative number to give you; it does not mean the platform has no limit.
Pixels describe image dimensions. Megabytes describe file weight. Aspect ratio describes shape. A file can pass one check and fail another.

The differences most likely to change your workflow
A white main image is a destination-specific choice
Amazon’s MAIN-image guidance includes category exceptions and different display rules for categories such as apparel. Read those instructions before preparing a catalog. A pure white canvas alone does not resolve missing accessories, inaccurate colors, or the wrong product presentation. Amazon’s main and supplementary images have different jobs. For resale, think about what an edit might hide. A cleaner background is only useful if a buyer can still inspect the item. Preserve original condition photographs, and take close-ups when wear is difficult to see in a whole-item view. Our clothing resale guide covers that practical review.
TikTok Shop still images are square
A vertical social video and a Shop product photo are different assets. Do not use the familiar 9:16 video shape as the specification for listing stills. TikTok Shop’s US policy also prohibits repeated angles and added text, logos, borders, watermarks, or background graphics. Plan real front, back, and detail photographs rather than generating several versions of one angle. TikTok Shop Product Listing Policy.
Poshmark’s portrait display does not force a closet-wide re-edit
The March 2026 update preserves existing original photos and makes cover updates optional. Inspect your current covers first. A long dress may benefit from a new composition, while another item may already fit the display well. This is a framing decision, not evidence that every old square photo is invalid. Poshmark’s update.
Keep an unedited branch for Vinted
Vinted’s catalog rule explicitly disallows image editing. Keep those originals separate from background-replaced or restyled exports intended for other destinations. If the image needs improvement, change the lighting or physical backdrop and take another photograph. An editor preset is not a workaround for that rule. Vinted catalog rules.
Build a reusable photo folder without assuming one universal export
Start with a short shot list for each item: whole item, reverse, useful details, labels, included components, and visible condition issues. Capture those photographs before trying any background treatment. See the source-photo guide for preparation.
Keep three groups of files: untouched originals, reviewed edits, and destination exports. Include an item identifier in filenames so an attractive photograph cannot accidentally become the cover for a different size or variation.
Choose a representative sample before processing a large set. Include a pale item, a reflective item, a fine edge, and an item with readable text if those exist in your inventory. Compare the outputs against the originals. Look for missing stitching, altered lettering, changed finish, or an incorrect number of pieces.
Then check each destination’s export requirements. Do not stretch a product to fill a shape. Add appropriate space or choose a better composition, subject to that platform’s policy. Confirm actual downloaded dimensions and file size, not just the name of an export option.
Upload a complete sample listing through your normal seller workflow. Inspect the search or collection cover as well as the product page. If the preview cuts off a sleeve or handle, solve that before repeating the preparation across the rest of the folder.
Check the native tools before paying for another editor
For small fixes, tools already available in your selling platform may be sufficient. Etsy provides cropping, thumbnail adjustment, and app-based photo adjustments. Shopify’s media editor includes crop, resize, and background-editing functions. A Shopify display issue may also belong in the theme settings rather than the source photograph. What this guide cannot certify
This comparison is a dated starting point, not an approval guarantee or exhaustive category manual. It does not supply unverified file-size ceilings, assume US rules apply worldwide, or establish blanket permission for every AI edit.
A successful export also cannot fix product eligibility, image rights, catalog ownership, or upload integrations. Walmart specifically notes that another seller’s selected content can determine the displayed image. If a valid upload does not replace the product image, check that account or catalog issue before editing again. Walmart’s image guide.
For your next batch, keep the originals, choose the destination, verify the current category guidance, and review the final preview. Those four checks are more useful than treating any preset as marketplace approval.
